Most of us bring some extra baggage to the gym beyond the few pounds we hope to lose or the muscles we’d like to tone up. Factors such as joint or muscle pain, a history of injury or illness, a recent break from activity, or aggressive training for a sporting event all put our bodies at risk as we ramp up a fitness program. The wrong choices or improper form can result in overuse injuries, exacerbate existing issues or lead to frustration. Exercise programs should be personalized and prioritized. They should take into consideration any predisposition to injury we may have, address specific areas of muscle weakness, tightness or loss of mobility, and focus on restoring symmetry and energy while protecting us from injury.
